After having another great week with your children, here is an overview of what has happened this past week and what will be happening this coming week.
Last week (11/2-11/7):
We started our Monday by going to Mass to celebrate and honor All Souls Day. Monday was a day of firsts for this first grade! Starting in this new month of November, we started a new chapter in Math (addition and subtraction up to 12), introduced our new spelling list (short /e/ words), and reviewed the word "commandment" in Religion. But that's not all for introducing new words! Some of the ELA challenge words for this week include "mended", "cozy" and "chorus", which the group gave me descriptive meanings to.
On Tuesday, we learned about St. Martin De Porres and discussed the importance of making every person feel included no matter what differences we may have. We also reviewed the "Great Commandment". During Social Studies, we acted out the life of William Penn in preparation for Thursday's Trip.
On Wednesday, we had our visit with John Gurney, the famous illustrator and author. He talked to us about the processes he went through to become an illustrator as well as showed us his wonderful illustrative skills. Gabriella even got to pretend she was a model for one of his pictures! We started our "BookIt!" challenge today. For more information, see below.
On Thursday, we had our field trip to Pennsbury Manor! The students really seemed to enjoy touring around the estate, participating in jobs normally done at that time, and even getting to feel some animal furs! Thank you greatly, chaperones! I have posted my pictures onto my webpage. When we returned to school, we played a game of Sparkle, reviewed our Spelling words in preparation for our test and learned all about Veteran's Day.
On Friday, we had our First Friday Mass and had a chance to see how hard the second graders worked on their Saint Pageant. Congrats to Madeleine and Karly for showing the virtue of Peace and being "Disciple of the Month" for the month of October! November's virtue is "Patience", so I will be looking out for that! We had taken our Spelling test, practiced our "Ten Frame" skills in Math and learned about comparing and contrasting in ELA. For a nice change of pace for each child, I have moved seats. It is with the continued hope that each child will excel and build new relationships with different classmates.
Monday--Young Rembrandts; Student Council Meeting
Tuesday--Technology Class; Minecraft Club

*On Wednesday, your child was sent home with a little ticket earning them a free mini-pizza at a local Pizza Hut. You child has already earned that by reading enough to reach our goal for the month of October. For more information, feel free to check out the website at www.bookitprogram.com.
*Do you have a Kindle app? Then you can also download free ebooks for family to enjoy together! Go to amazon.com/PIZZAHUTBOOKIT and enter the promo code FUNREADS to download ebooks.
