Well, we’re off and running with our Rainforest Project for this year! As you know, the children have already begun researching the specific animal that they chose to include. For those who did not get to see the past "Rainforests of St. Ignatius", you are in for a real treat! In the past, our Rainforest even made it into the paper! I plan to contact the newspapers again this year and to hopefully contact some of the TV stations! The children always do a fabulous job and I’m sure that this year will be no exception! This is a cross-curricular project involving our entire curriculum! We touch on Religion, Math, Science, Social Studies, Grammar, Art, Technology and the Writing Process! The children learn a lot during this project, get an opportunity to apply skills that they have mastered this year and have fun in the process! The “Rainforest” is a totally student designed and created project! I can't wait to see what they come up with this year!
Here is how the project works: The children pick an animal that belongs in the Rainforest and begin to research that animal. Once they have enough information, they begin the first component of their project and that is to create a representation of their animal to be hung on our Rainforest wall that will be located in the cafeteria along the wall opposite the kitchen. The animals (due on April 19th) can be as simple as a blown up colored picture of the animal - cut out and glued to a piece of cardboard in the shape of the animal to more intricate renderings involving a variety of materials such as felt, fur and feathers! The second component is the presentation component that is due on Friday, April 28th. This component can be in any form that your child chooses as long as the required information is included. A short list of possible forms is on the Rainforest handout. Also, all information regarding this project is also posted on my website.
During school time, the class will work on creating the backdrop necessary to create the layers of the Rainforest, including trees, vines, plants and small ponds. This will be done this year with the added technical assistance and exceptional talents of Mr. Dooley and Mrs. Parisian! We would like to thank both teachers in advance for all their help! While the children work on creating their animal, they are also choosing a creative avenue to share the important information they have found regarding their animal and its importance to the Rainforest.
The Rainforest will be assembled on the afternoon of April 21st (the animals are due on the 20th).
Take care and God bless,
P.S. If there are any parents available on the afternoon of April 21st to assist us in the assembly process your help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! We especially need two or three dads to bring over and assemble (on the 19th or the 20th) as well as take down and dismantle (on May 9th) the “Rainforest Platform”. Thank you in advance!
RAINFOREST PROJECT – PHASE 2
During the following weeks (5/1/17-5/12/17), you will be the “Teachers” and help the rest of us to learn about your animal and why it is important to the Rainforest.
