Just a reminder that next Saturday, October 24th, at the 5:15 Mass, we will be celebrating a Candidacy Mass for those who will receive the Sacraments of First Penance and First Holy Communion this year! This special Mass is held to recognize the children who will be receiving these two very special Sacraments this year by including the “Rite of Acceptance” in our Liturgy.
This is a brief ceremony that takes place after the Introductory Rites of the Mass and marks the unofficial beginning of our preparation for these two very important Sacraments. The children and their families can sit anywhere in the church. However, as each child arrives, they should check in with me so that I can record their attendance and participation in this most special ceremony.
The ceremony will begin as the candidates are asked to stand and answer two questions where they tell our community what they are asking of God. Then the parents will be asked to stand and answer a question. Following this, Monsignor will ask the candidates to stand on the seat of the pew between their parents and he will instruct the parents to make the sign of he cross with their thumbs first on the ears, then on the lips, eyes, chest, shoulders, hands, and feet of their children while he prays over them. A sample of one of the prayers is “Receive the sign of the cross on your ears, that you may always hear the voice of God within you.” After this brief ceremony ends, the Mass will continue as usual, but the General Intercessions will include prayers for the candidates and their parents and then representatives of these children and their parents will bring up the gifts in the Offertory Procession.
This is a beautiful way to let the children see how special this year of preparation is and to let them experience the love and support of their St. Ignatius family as they embark on this very important leg of their Faith journey. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Yours in Christ,
