Today we had a great time doing our first Mystery Location Skype call. A friend of mine put out a message on Twitter that she had a last minute cancellation and needed a partner. I told her we would give it a try even though my students had never done one before and my 3rd graders where going up against her 6th graders! We did a few practice rounds and we were ready to go! We used dry erase maps and the maps in our textbook to narrow down their location.
Each class took turns asking Yes and No questions. Ava and Sophia took notes for us so we could remember what facts we had already learned. Are you located in the West? Do you border an ocean? We had to think fast and come up with good questions while also answering their questions about the location of our state.
It was a very close game but we ended up winning by just one question ahead of them! They were from the George Washington Middle School in Northern Virginia not too far from Washington DC. We exchanged a few facts about our school and state after the game. Their school has 1,300 students from 6th - 8th grade. We also learned that Virginia has no professional sports teams, their state flower is the Dogwood and their state bird is the Cardinal. George Washington's house - Mount Vernon is also located there. Thanks again Mrs. Dunbar and class for a fun first Mystery Location Skype!
