I just wanted to catch you up on a few of the happenings in 3A over the next few weeks. First off, the first trimester will close this Friday and report cards will go out on December 8th. Parent Teacher conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, December 12th. Keep an eye on the school communication for information about how to sign up for a conference through Option C. Your children have been working hard this year and I think you will be very happy with their report cards. Since we are at the end of the first marking period, I would like all written work to be done in cursive from now on. Please remind your children of this if they forget when doing homework. In Math we are working on multiplication. We have learned the following sets of times tables: 0, 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10. After we finish this chapter, we will move on to Charts and Graphs while continuing to memorize a new set of times tables every few weeks. Adding in 5 - 10 minutes of practice at home each night along with the other regular homework will go a long way in helping the children to memorize their times tables. They can write them, do flash cards, play game, etc. We have also started doing a daily Math Maintenance quiz. The children do one row on each side of the paper each day to keep sharp on skills we aren't currently working on. At the end of the next trimester, I will average up all of these quizzes into one test grade. The first one will come home this week in the test folder.
Our class was the second place winner of the Box Tops contest. Thank you for all of your donations to that cause! For our prize, 3A can dress down on Friday, December 8thand they will also receive a food treat. This Friday, December 1st, is a paid dress down day for a $1.00 or more donation.
Our Christmas show is Monday, December 11th. The children are asked to dress up in red, green and white dress clothing. They will also wear those clothes to school that day for our dress rehearsal in the afternoon. On Monday night you will drop the children off in the Church before heading to your seats in the auditorium. Keep an eye on the homework calendar for an exact time but it's usually about 6:45 pm. Since they will be sitting in Church waiting for their turn to sing, the kids can bring card games, coloring books or other small items to keep them busy.
Grade 3A will be doing a secret Christmas craft this year and we are in need of colored toddler sized baby socks. They can be new or gently used as long as the used ones are clean on the bottom. I have a few left over from last year and we only need one per student. If a few students can donate a pair, we'd really appreciate it. I hope you like the gift we make!
If your children haven't already mentioned it, I am reading the book Wonder by RJ Palacio in class right now. The movie just came out a few weeks ago. It's an extraordinary story that I've been reading to my classes for the last 5 years and they love it every year. You might want to go and see the movie with your child after we finish the book. Most of the 4th graders and I (and their families) went to see it the night it came out. It includes wonderful themes of friendship, kindness and courage. I am trying to read it fast so it will still be out in theaters when we finish.
Finally, Miss Barker and I have spoken with our school counselor about doing Friendship/Conflict Resolution classes with the 3rd grade. Mrs. Megan Giampaolo will meet with each class once a week on Tuesdays to discuss these topics and give the students suggestions for how to handle school yard conflicts and how to be a better friend. Please sign and return the permission slip that will come home this week by Monday, December 4th so we can get started next Tuesday.
Don't forget to keep checking our classroom calendar and website for news! We received Peace cranes from Canada this week and we are scheduled to Skype with an author this Thursday. Save the date - Grade 3A is in charge of the first Friday Mass on February 2nd.
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your family. I am very thankful for my fun filled days spent with your extraordinary children this year!
