Sumdog - Sumdog is a website that we use for Math review that the children really enjoy. They offer regional and national contests throughout the year to let students test their skills against other classes. Last week our class took part in the Bucks County Math Contest offered by Sumdog and we won! We competed against 18 other classrooms and came in first place. Congratulation to Alex, Shannon, Diego and Isabelle who made it into the top ten overall students. Our prize for winning is a free subscription to Sumdog premium which usually costs $2.00 per person. The students are thrilled because now they have access to new games and I get more assessment features as well. Check HERE to see the overall results. Way to go Third Grade!
Kidblog - We finally got our Kidblog site up and running for this year after working out some technical difficulties with the company. Our first post is a cartoon the children made using the app Puppet Pals. Their job was to create a fun cartoon that also teaches the class about their assigned saint. Click HERE to visit that site. Feel free to leave them comments! Come back and visit throughout the year.
The 100 Word Challenge - Recently we started taking part in this weekly writing prompt. Each week the owner posts a few words (or sometimes a photo) that the children must put in a story that is only 100 words long. In the past we would write the story on our Kidblog and then link it to the 100 Word Challenge site. But this year they have a new format where the students log in and write the story on the Night Zookeeper's site. This site is based in England so the children will get international visitor's leaving comments. There are also a group of teachers and parents called Team 100 who commit to leaving comments for several students each week. The comments really help the children grow in their writing. When they know that they have an authentic audience reading their writing, they work harder to do their best. The first prompt we did last week was "it felt like." The kids could write any story that they wanted as long as they included these words. Click HERE to see our 100 Word Challenge stories.
Parent-Teacher Conferences - Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, November 11th this year. We will be using Option C for all conference scheduling. You will log in to Option C and choose from the available open time slots that I have listed. It will really be nice for parents who need to see more then one teacher because you will be able to schedule them close together. This system will be open starting November 4th in the evening. Look for more info from Mr. Merrick in the Weekly Newsletter.
Recycling Scarecrow - The students and I had a lot of fun creating our scarecrow! I was very impressed with how well they worked together and cooperated in our creation. Check out the photos below.
