Do you like to go on scavenger hunts? Do you like to take walks in the woods? Then you might like to try Geocaching! This is a new hobby that I started doing last summer and I love it. I decided to offer an after school club to teach the children how to do this fun activity. It's a way for families to get outside and have fun together while getting exercise and learning about new places in your neighborhood.
Geocaching started when GPS was created as a way for them to test it to see if it really worked. The idea was to hide a container in the woods and then use GPS technology to see if you could find it. Fast forward 16 years and there are now over 2 million geocaches of all shapes and sizes hidden all over the world! They are all managed and listed on the Geocaching.com website. In order to play, you need to create an account on the site and then download the Geocaching app to your smartphone to help you navigate to the caches near you. Once you find one, you sign the log book, log that you "Found It" on the app, and get a smiley face for that cache on your map. I have 40 smiley faces and counting! Creating the account is free and gives you access to a certain number of caches. You can upgrade to a become a premium member with full access to all of them for a fee. Our St. Ignatius Geocaching Club will run for 4 weeks on Mondays in April - April 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th - from 3:15 to 4:30. For the first 2 weeks we will meet in school so I can teach the children how to do it and I will also hide one or two on the school grounds so they can practice finding them. On the last 2 weeks, April 18th and 25th, I would like to take the children to a nearby park to find the caches hidden there (weather permitting). I am limiting this club to students in grade 3 and 4 and I am capping it at 15 students. In order for this to work, I will need parent volunteers who can drive and chaperone on April 18th and 25th.
If your child is interested in joining the Geocaching Club, please fill outTHIS FORMand be sure to indicate if you can volunteer to be a driver/chaperone for our off site classes. If I do not get enough parent volunteers to drive the students signed up, we would only be able to do the first 2 weeks of the club. I am not permitted to drive students. I'll send out an email with more information when we get closer to the start date. Feel free to email me with any questions.
