It was so nice to meet you last night at Back to School Night! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me. I wanted to give an overview of the night...
There is a wonderful beginning to our school day that you may or may not be familiar with. It is our “Morning Meeting”, and it lasts about twenty minutes each day.
After gathering in a circle, we begin by greeting each other by name in a friendly and cheerful way. The benefit of a greeting is that each and every child is recognized to start the day. We work on a firm handshake and eye contact.
Next, the students have a chance to share any new event with the class. It can be what they are doing next weekend or anything that happened the night before. This allows them to work on their speaking and listening skills, as well as communicate with their classmates. The other students that are listening can ask questions about the students’ special share.
After sharing, there is an activity for the whole class. We might sing a song, read a poem, watch a video, play a math game, or do some other activity. This allows the students to work together and problem solve as a whole group while learning together.
The last part of our meeting is called News and Announcements. During this time, students think about the day ahead. They read the chart together or individually which allows the class to practice reading/speaking skills. We also “work” the chart, which means that we use the chart for learning. We may practice a reading, language, or understanding a quote.
The Morning Meeting is a great way to build community, increase excitement about learning, and improve academic and social skills. Please contact me if you have any questions about Morning Meeting.
Starting next week, the students will be asked to complete a reading log for homework. They can choose a book from our classroom library or it can be a book from home. I ask for them to read at least 15 minutes a night and at the end of the week they will write a brief summary on their book.
Each child will have the opportunity to choose a non-curricular elective. Electives will be on the Fridays that we do not have mass.
Each student will have the opportunity to present a current event to the class. I will send a letter home with directions on how to complete the current events.
Fourth grade is going to be a GREAT year!!
