Dear 5th Grade Families,
Though I will be posting the summer reading, math, and school supply lists, for the entire school in the coming weeks, I wanted to give you access to the Reading Olympics list now that it has been issued.
This summer, the incoming 6th graders need to read one of the following books:
Touch Blue by Cynthia Lord
The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare
Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech
The Magician's Elephant by Kate DeCamillo
In addition, the students need to read at least one additional book from the elementary Reading Olympics list which is posted here. The assignment for the books will be posted soon.
I encourage the students to read as many books as possible if they plan on joining the Reading Olympics team next year. I also encourage the students to read material of their own interest (books, newspapers, magazines, online articles) and discuss them with you.
Yesterday afternoon, I discussed the students' Terra Nova results with them individually and pointed out areas of strengths and areas to target growth for the rest of this school year and next year. Please know that I will use the results and the detailed reports that I receive, along with classroom grades and my own observations, to plan and deliver instruction in May and June as well as in 6th grade.
I scanned the scores and will drop a copy in their assessment folder this weekend along with their other tests. Mrs. Di will be issuing a chart with the comparisons for each grade, but our class average for each subtest was good, and our class average was at least ten points above the average scores for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia as well as our peer schools in Bucks County.
Also, Jessica, Juliana, Meredith, and Sara all entered stories in the Southampton Library's book contest; I am proud of these fifth graders for representing our school well. Juliana and Sara's co-authored placed first our of all the 5th grade entries, and Meredith's story placed second! Mrs. O'Neill informed me today that the library received forty entries in the 5th grade division, so this is quite an achievement!
Finally, please remember to either submit payment online, return payment, or return the spring picture packets this week.
