As we light the fourth candle (or turn on the four switch on our classroom's electric Advent wreath), I hope that you all had an enjoyable weekend and are preparing for Christmas.
The 5th graders did well performing in last Monday's Christmas Concert. I also appreciate their help with creating the concert program, their performance in the band and their class song, and assistance on stage. Pictures from the concert are on the 5th grade page, and you can order a Christmas Concert DVD here.
Click here to read the e-edition of The Crusader, our student newsletter. Jessica, Meredith, and Miranda have been our 5th grade writers this year, and I invite more 5th graders to get involved and see their stories published in print!
Please remember that altar server applications, available here, are due back to me by Monday, January 4th. Training will be scheduled by Fr. Dalin and me after we return from Christmas vacation.
Also, as I stated in the addendum, the students now have an additional week for their DARE Taking a Stand Project. Click here for more information on the project; they will be presenting them during DARE class on January 12th. For the January 5th class, Officer Omlor will be bringing a police car and K-9 unit for the students to learn about and explore.
Talent Show act submissions are due by January 7th; click here for more information and the form.
Tomorrow, the students may wear their pajamas to school; if they wish to wear slippers in the classroom, they should wear shoes to school and change into them.
We created a class Advent calendar for the Student Council's door decorating contest. A picture appears below; the students each created a card with an Advent message as well as an illustration of a family Christmas tradition. The numbers are colored violet or rose based on the candle lit on the Advent wreath that particular week.
On Monday, we will pray our Christmas Novena, assemble breakfast bags for Aid for Friends (see details below for items that you can still bring in for tomorrow), watch The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe which we will compare and contrast with the novel, have a school prayer service at 11:00 AM, and we will have our class Christmas Party at 1:30 PM.
Tomorrow, we conclude our Christmas Novena. Our novena has run from 12/8-12/21 (though a novena is traditionally prayed for nine consecutive days, we counted nine consecutive school days). The novena will be through the intersession of St. Therese of Lisieux (The Little Flower) for our special intentions and that we imitate the love that she had for Christ and those around her; the prayer is the Novena of the Twenty-four Glory Be to the Fathers. For our special intentions and as a Christmas tribute to the 5th grade class, they will be remembered by the Carmelite priests, at the National Shrine of St. Therese, in their Masses and prayers. Their enrollment certificate is posted below.
Please send in all breakfast bag items by tomorrow so that we may assemble the bags along with cards that the students will make to place with the bags. Here is a description from AFF of items that we can put in the bag:
"miniature boxes of cereal, orange juice cartons, packets of oatmeal, tea bags, instant coffee, pudding, fruit cups, boxes of raisins, plastic utensils, napkins. 4 or 5 items in each bag is plenty but they must be non-perishable. *Heavily sugared cereals are not good for many of our clients. Please do not put in the bags any of the following: cookies, muffins, fresh fruit or apple sauce cups that come with an aluminum top that can be easily punctured."
As a school, we are also collecting winter items (such as hats, scarfs, mittens, and gloves) which can be hung on the small tree in the cafeteria by tomorrow. These items will be donated to children in need.
Please remember to visit the 5th Grade page of school website for picture, handouts, homework, the assessment/project calendar, and an archive of the 5th grade newsletters.
If I have any additional information tomorrow, I will send out an addendum. Have a great week!
