Dear 5th Grade Families,
I hope that you all had a great weekend. In addition to the exams, This week, we will finish our final writing piece for religion and ELA as well as a story about a concept that was learned in math or science class this year. We will also be discussing Tuck Everlasting with a fishbowl discussion, as well as a selection of poems. We are going to begin watching Tuck Everlasting as time permits (which we can finish next week). Finally, we are going to play Apples to Apples with all of the vocabulary words that we learned in the Storytown book this year. Finally, we will work on assembling our writing portfolios. I look forward to a productive and enjoyable final week of instruction and assessment.
I included the exam schedule in the above calendar. Tomorrow, the religion exam will be taken during religion and the math exam during the morning's double math period. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the respective exams will be taken from 8:45 AM until 10:06 PM with the subject teacher; we will resume the normal schedule after snack time (10:06 AM-10:16 AM).
Because the lists are on facing pages and I was not paying attention, I administered the wrong spelling list on Friday (List A instead of List B). While the spelling patterns are the same, the words are not. Since I have to administer Eric's test tomorrow since he was absent, anybody else can take it as well and receive the higher grade. The students did well (and the point of the exam is to test patterns as opposed to memorization of specific words), but I feel that it is only fair to offer the option in addition to my apologies.
This Thursday, we are going to have a teddy bear picnic with KB. The students should pack a lunch, blanket or towel, and (optionally) a favorite stuffed toy. We will eat outside at 11:30 AM. If the weather is rainy, we will have the picnic in the 5th grade classroom.
Below is a schedule with next week's activities as well as the field trip details. We are working on the details for the end of the year party, and they will be published in next Sunday's newsletter.

June 8th Field Trip Information:
For the June 8th trip, we will depart the Yardley Train station on the 8:53 AM (#3421) train. If you are not chaperoning, I will be at the station by 7:45 AM, and you may drop your child off at the shelter on the Reading Avenue side. If you are chaperoning, parking is 1.00 (quarters only); I recommend parking on the opposite side of the station by the VFW/Yardley Kids Academy. Please be at the station by 8:25 AM.
We will arrive at Suburban Station at 10:00 PM We will then walk from Suburban Station to the Cathedral Basilica, which is about 1/2 of a mile, for a 10:30 AM tour. After the guided tour, we will walk to Reading Terminal Market (about 1 mile) for lunch. We have a room reserved from 12:00 PM-1:00 PM to guarantee seating since the market is very busy at lunch time. After lunch, (we need to be out of the room by 1:00 PM), the students can shop or have dessert. We will head to Jefferson Station (Market East Station which is below the terminal market) where we will catch the 2:10 PM train (#3421) to Yardley which will arrive at 3:05 PM. If you are not chaperoning, again, you can pick up at the station where I will wait until everyone is picked up.
The students need to bring money for lunch and may bring a camera (optional). If bringing a bag, I suggest no bigger than a small draw-string bag (like the one received at DARE graduation). The dress is summer uniform with sneakers for walking.
