I am including the link to your child's assessment portfolio here: Assessment Link 2020 The first trimester ends on Friday, December 2nd, and report cards will be distributed to the 5th graders by Fr. Brownholtz on Friday, December 9th. Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, December 13th. We will send out instructions for scheduling conferences using OptionC next week.
After correcting them, I found that the unit tests for Journeys are structured in a way that is very different as compared to Storytownwhich the students and I are used to. Based on the results, I have been using the extra vocabulary words (like we did last week) to build vocabulary skills. I will also be giving more smaller tests during the unit (one of them this Wednesday) which will help the students prepare for the unit tests and practice producing written responses to their reading. While there is still no way to study for these tests, I did emphasize to the students the importance of reading carefully, completing reading assignments that are given for classwork and homework, and reading the questions before reading the passage as well as eliminating multiple choice answers that they know are wrong before guessing.
We are not scheduled to have DARE class this week; the next DARE class will be on Tuesday, November 29th. Please remember that the Taking a Stand Projects are due on Tuesday, December 6th.
Wednesday is a noon dismissal with a Thanksgiving Prayer Service in the morning. Bus transportation (Council Rock, Neshaminy & Pennsbury) and CARES will be available that afternoon. School will be closed Thanksgiving Day (11/24), Friday (11/25), and Monday (11/28). Classes will resume on Tuesday, November 29th.
Looking ahead to Advent and December, below are some reminders for when we return from Thanksgiving break:
For the month of December, we will be collecting breakfast items to assemble breakfast bags for Aid for Friends as a service project. Aid for Friends (AFF) provides meals to home-bound seniors in our area, and both St. Ignatius and St. John the Evangelist Parishes have a long tradition of providing meals for AFF. You can send in any of the items listed below over the next few weeks. On the morning of December 21st, we are going to assemble the bags along with cards that the students will make to place with the bags. Here is a description from AFF of items that we can put in the bag:
"miniature boxes of cereal, orange juice cartons, packets of oatmeal, tea bags, instant coffee, pudding, fruit cups, boxes of raisins, plastic utensils, napkins. 4 or 5 items in each bag is plenty but they must be non-perishable. *Heavily sugared cereals are not good for many of our clients. Please do not put in the bags any of the following: cookies, muffins, fresh fruit or apple sauce cups that come with an aluminum top that can be easily punctured."
We will be attending the 9:00 AM Mass on Tuesdays during Advent.
Our parish Advent Gift Giving Mass will be on Tuesday, November 29th at 7:00 PM. The gifts will be donated to families of St. Katherine Drexel Parish, Chester & Sacred Heart Parish, Camden. Refreshments will be served after Mass. If you can not attend, gifts may be dropped off to school that morning, and they will be taken over to the church.
First Friday Mass for December will be on December 2nd at 9:00 AM. We will recognize two Disciples of the Month for peace.
Our class will be going to Santa's Secret Shop on Monday, December December 5th from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM. The shopping lists and other information will be sent home soon.
For the Christmas Concert on Monday, December 12th, the 5th graders need to wear dress clothes for their song "Soon and Very Soon." They need to wear their outfit to school that day for the dress rehearsal at 1:00 PM as well as to the evening performance. The evening show will begin at 7:15 PM this year; the students need to be dropped off in the church by 7:00 PM.
Please be sure to visit the 5th Grade page of the school website for copies of the newsletter, photos, forms, homework, and the assessment calendar.
I hope that you all have a happy Thanksgiving, and I pray that all who are traveling have a safe journey.
