November 8th, 2015
Tuesday- DARE 9:18 AM-10:06 AM (DARE Shirt); Open House
Thursday- Gym (Gym Uniform)
Friday- Elective; Dress Down Day for All For Books (5th Grade)
I hope that you all have been enjoying the weekend. I had a great three days at Mater Dei, visiting their school and evaluating their re-accreditation report with a great team of educators. The visit provided me with some new ideas, and it also reaffirmed, for me, my personal mission in Catholic education as well as the work that we do here, at St. Ignatius, in our faith community. I am also thankful for the efforts of our 5th grade class, under the direction of Mrs. Filosa. Now, I look forward to a great week together.
Congratulations to Jack and Maggie who were recognized as our Disciple of the Month, for demonstrating peacefulness, during the month of October. For November, we will be working on patience.
I re-scanned most of the ELA resources so that the spelling pages are easier to read. All of the resources for ELA are now on the "ELA 5" Google Classroom class. They are all accessible by clicking the "About" tab so that the students do not need to scroll through all of the assignments.
Tuesday, we are having an open house, for prospective families, from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM and again from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. If you know of any families who are looking to attend St. Ignatius (any grade), please invite them to join us on Tuesday or to call if the office if they can't make it but would like more information.
On Wednesday we will not have school because of parent/teacher conferences. With respect to scheduling conferences, I am glad to meet with you and offer general insights into your child's and social life at school; I can also specifically discuss academic performance in religion and language arts. If you are unable to make it on November 11th, we can schedule another time. Please let me know, and I will get back to you with a time by this coming Tuesday. If you would like to discuss specifics about another subject area, you can also schedule conferences with the other teachers.
On Friday, the students may dress down for winning the "All For Books" contest.
Don't forget about Turkey Bingo next Sunday from 1:30 PM until 5:30 PM! Order tickets here, and click here for the sign-up sheet to volunteer to help make for a fun and successful afternoon.
Below is information regarding our two field trips. Please note that the date for the June trip has changed to June 1st due to a scheduling conflict with the basilica (the tour is well worth it, however!). Both of these trips will depart from the Yardley Train Station, and we will meet there instead of the school on those two dates. If you will not be joining us as a chaperone, I will be at the station by 8:00 AM so that you can drop off.
I need 11 chaperones for each trip; if you are able to accompany us on one or both of these trips, please fill out the form here.
The final price, for both trips, will be no more than 35.00 for the students and adults (half for adults if you only go on one trip) (I am having one of the invoices adjusted, and I will send out the final price and permission forms either this week or next week, and then we will be all set for the spring). The pricing includes transportation, admission to the museum and the art/ELA program, a stipend to the basilica for the tour, and rental of a reserved room at Reading Terminal Market. The students will need to bring a lunch to the art museum and bring money for lunch at Reading Terminal.
Looking ahead, please plan to join us on Thursday, November 19th at 7:00 PM for our Home and School General Assembly Meeting in the cafeteria. In addition to Home and School updates, Brandon Lutz from the Bucks County Intermediate Unit will give a presentation on internet safety.
Finally, Wednesday, November 25th, is a half day. Dismissal will be at 12:00 PM. CARES and bus transportation will be available.
Please remember to visit the 5th Grade page of school website for picture, handouts, homework, the assessment/project calendar, and an archive of the 5th grade newsletters.
Have a great week!
Directions to Schedule Conferences for
Wednesday, November 11th:
Philadelphia Museum of Art Field Trip (April 21st, 2016):
We will depart from the Yardley Train Station on the 8:53 AM train, and we will arrive at 30th Street Station at 10:04 AM. We will then cross the Schuylkill River via the JFK Boulevard Bridge and descend to the Schuylkill River Trail which will take us to the Art Museum. We will then have the opportunity to climb the steps, get settled, and the students will have the opportunity to visit a gallery or two in groups (time permitting). At 11:30 AM, we have a guided tour with their "Art and ELA" program. Lunch will be from 12:30 PM-1:00 PM (the students will bring their own lunches). The students will then have from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM to tour in small groups. We will then assemble in the front courtyard (at the top of the steps) and then walk back to 30th Street Station for the 2:52 PM train. The train is scheduled to arrive in Yardley at 3:56 PM.
Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul/Reading Terminal Market Field Trip (June 1st, 2016):
We will depart from the Yardley Train Station on the 8:53 AM train, and we will arrive at Suburban Station at 10:00 AM. We will then walk to the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul for a 10:30 AM tour (after a picture on the front steps of the basilica). We will depart the cathedral basilica at about 11:40 AM and walk to Reading Terminal Market. Once at the market, the students will purchase their lunch, guided by their chaperones. We will have our own room with reserved seating, at the back of the market, from 12:00 PM-1:00 PM. After lunch, we usually get ice cream (or other dessert) before assembling at a designated meeting place in the market (I'll provide a map). Then, we will walk to Jefferson Station (formerly Market East), and we will depart on the 2:05 PM train. We are scheduled to arrive in Yardley at 3:00 PM.
