I hope that you all have had an enjoyable weekend. Last Sunday, I had the privilege of attending the Papal Mass (thank you, Mrs. Di for giving me your tickets). Standing on the Parkway and hearing our Holy Father with so many Catholics (and others) reminded me of how privileged I feel to be a part of the Church and specifically our Catholic community here at St. Ignatius School (I also enjoyed the students sharing your families' experiences with the Papal Visit). I am looking forward to a great second month of school, and I truly appreciate working with the 5th grade students and parents.
Please remember to visit the 5th Grade page of school website for picture, handouts, homework, the assessment/project calendar, and an archive of the 5th grade newsletters.
On Monday, we will be attending an assembly about recycling; this week, we are staring a new recycling program which will allow us to recycle much of the classroom and cafeteria items that are currently being thrown away. A blue recycle bin will be placed in each classroom as well as in the cafeteria. An overview of the recycling program can be found here on the school website.
On Tuesday, the students may wear their DARE shirts so that we can get our group picture (we were unable to do so on Friday because not everyone was in school). We will not, however, see Officer Omlor as he has another training seminar (we knew this from the beginning; the students will have all ten lessons before graduation). Please remember to sign and return the permission form which was sent home or can be found here.
We will be changing seats and jobs this week (probably not on Monday, however, because of the assembly).
Congratulations to Matthew and Meredith who were recognized as our disciples of the month for September. For October, we will be working on demonstrating peace; the handout with information about peace can be found here.
On Wednesday, we will be taking a whole-school photo on the playground. This picture will be used for the yearbook cover.
During the month of October, we will be praying the Rosary with our kindergarten buddies on Wednesday mornings. The students may bring in rosary beads or borrow them from me for the month.
Sunday, after the 11:30 AM Mass, begins St. Ignatius's annual forty hours devotion. We will be visiting the Blessed Sacrament for adoration on Monday, October 12th, from 2:30 PM-3:00 PM. Forty hours concludes with a homily by Fr. Matt Guckin, a procession, and benediction on Tuesday, October 13th, at 7:00 PM. I attended a workshop on Reconciliation by Fr. Matt last spring, and he was excellent.
Next week, we will have a unit test in reading, and then I will send an email out (after the test is corrected) with a link to the students' virtual test folders. You will receive an individual email with the link and access details.
Next week is also the Scholastic Book Fair in the Media Center. The 5th grade will be previewing on Tuesday, 10/13, from 9:20 AM-10:05 AM, and they will shop on Thursday, 10/15, from 10:15 AM-11:00 AM. The full schedule can be found here. The book fair will also be open for family shopping on Sunday, 10/11, from 12:00 PM-2:00 PM and Tuesday, 10/13, from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM.
Have a great week!
