Thursday- Gym (Gym Uniform); Band Assembly 9:00 AM; 5th-8th Grade Parent Meeting 7:00 PM
I hope that you all are enjoying the long weekend. Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year at St. Ignatius School. This is the first weekly newsletter for the school year where I will present important information regarding our class and school.
Tuesday is Meet Your Teacher Day from 2:00 PM-3:00 PM. You may bring in school supplies and materials so that there is not so much to carry on the first day of school. On the desks, you will find a DARE shirt, homework planner, religion book, handwriting book, and religion and ELA workbooks. The workbooks will need to be covered with clear contact paper; please note that the students will also have science workbooks, a math workbook, and a grammar practice book (arriving soon) that will also need to be covered with clear contact paper.
Wednesday is the first day of school; drop off begins at 8:15 AM, and students should be in school by 8:25 AM to be ready for their first class at 8:30 AM. The students have a designated place, in the classroom, to write their transportation plans if there are different from their normal routine; please also remember to send in a note for transportation changes or absences. The St. Ignatius notepad sheets are a great way to do so.
Thursday is 5th grade's gym day; the students need to wear their gym uniform on Thursdays unless otherwise directed by me.
Thursday our band director will present a demonstration of the various instruments that the school band program offers. A parent meeting for students new to the band will be held on Wednesday, September 13th at 7:00 PM in the Media Center.
Thursday evening is a 5th to 8th grade parent meeting at 7:00 PM in the cafeteria. After an introduction, you will follow your child's schedule and meet all of the core subject teachers in their classrooms.
DARE is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 13th (subject to Officer Omlor's schedule); on DARE days, the students will wear their DARE shirt along with their uniform pants or skirt. DARE will be on Wednesdays for ten weeks. A parent meeting will be held on Thursday, September 21st at 7:00 PM so that you can meet Officer Omlor and learn more about the program.
In the next few weeks, we will be taking two field trips with an additional field trip occurring in June. The first will be on Thursday, September 28th with the 6th, 7th, & 8th graders to the Shrine of St. Katharine Drexel in Bensalem. The permission form and details will be sent home soon; this trip will not require any parent chaperones as extra teachers will be accompanying us to the shrine.
On Thursday, October 5th we will be traveling to the Philadelphia Museum of Art both to explore the galleries as well as take a guided tour called "Treasures of the Museum." We are also scheduled (thought he date is still being confirmed) to travel to the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul and Reading Terminal Market on Monday, June 11th. Both of these trips will depart from the Yardley Train Station, and we will meet there instead of the school on those two dates. These are both trips that I have taken quite a few times with the 5th graders, and I am very excited to share this experience with our class.
Because of the nature of the trips and the transportation, I can take as many parents as would like to chaperone on the October 5th and June 11th trips. Next week, I will send out the full itinerary, schedule, cost, and interest form for the October 5th trip to the art museum. In the meantime, please double check that your clearances are up to date and on file with the parish office if you would like to chaperone. All of the requirements can be found on the Safe Environment page of the school website.
Please be sure to visit the 5th grade page of the school website; on that page you will find the Class Schedule, 5th Grade Class Overview, homework and long term assignment calendars, and pictures.
I look forward to starting school and working with all of you; have a great week!
