Monday- No School- Labor Day
Tuesday- Band Assembly 9:00 AM; 5th-8th Parent Meeting 7:00 PM
Friday- Elective Sign-up; Opening Liturgy 9:00 AM Church
I hope that you are all enjoying the Labor Day weekend, and that the students had a great first week of 5th grade.
An emergency card for the school nurse was included in the Back to School Night packet (it was sent home on Friday if you were not able to attend Thursday night). Please complete and return the card this week.
I have confirmed that the DARES parent meeting will be on Thursday, September 17th at 7:00 PM in the 5th grade classroom; the first DARE class will be on Tuesday, September 22nd. If you have not already done so, please let me know whether I should order an adult small or adult medium DARE shirt for your child. The DARE shirt will be worn on Tuesdays (along with the uniform pants or skirt), once DARE begins, as well as for DARE graduation in January.
On Tuesday evening, at 7:00 PM, there will be a parent meeting for 5th-8th grade parents where you will have the opportunity to follow a modified version of your child's schedule. You will move from class to class where you will hear from each of the teachers.
On Tuesday, during class, we will be selecting a Student Council representative for the class. As outlined in the 5th grade overview, I will ask all interested students to submit their names and then choose using my grouping app. I will then have the student ask his or her parents' permission before submitting our representative's name to Mrs. McKenna. The representative will need to attend the meetings which are one Monday per month.
Our opening liturgy will be on Friday at 9:00 AM in the Church; please join us if you are able to do so. Our Student Council representative will be installed, after Mass, along with the other members of the Student Council.
Elective sign-up will occur on Friday; the catalog of classes will be published in Wednesday's school newsletter. The students will indicate their top three choices (electronically), and the classes lists will be published the following Monday. Electives begin on Friday, September 18th.
Each month, we will be recognizing two disciples of the month who demonstrate a virtue, based on the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, which we will be working on as a school. The disciples of the month will be announced at the next month's First Friday Mass, and I will notify you in advance (it will be a surprise for the students) so that you can attend. Love is the virtue for September; a description can be found here.
5th graders have the opportunity to join Reading Olympics; our first meeting will be on Monday, September 21st from 3:30 PM-4:30 PM. An overview of the program and the book list can be found on the After School Activities page of the school website.
Looking ahead, we will be preparing the First Friday Masses in February and June (I was off by a month at Back to School Night) as well as reading at the Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 11th. I will ask for volunteers and we will begin preparing for these liturgies/devotions a few weeks before they occur.
Have a great week!
