I hope that you all are having an enjoyable weekend. This past week, we had a productive time finishing the book
The City of Ember and watching the movie. It was great to hear the conversation that was sparked by the many differences between the book and movie (as well as how many of the students preferred the book over the movie). Ember is one of four books in a series; chapter one of the second book, The People of Sparks, is included at the end of our book. I have a limited quantity of the rest of the books for the students to borrow if they would like to continue with the series. We will wrap up this week and soon move on to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
Congratulations to Erin and Ronan who were recognized as our Disciples of the Month for November. The virtue that we will be working on in December is charity.
Our class will be going to Santa's Secret Shop on Monday. The shopping list and flyer were sent home last week. This year, instead of sending in cash or a check, you can also submit your child's budget on the form here and have the total billed through OptionC.
Tuesday is a Christmas add-on day for St. Nicholas Day; the students may wear Christmas themed add-ons along with their DARE shirt and uniform (pins, socks, hair accessories, etc).
We have DARE on Tuesday; please remember that the Taking a Stand Projects are due that day.
We will also be attending the 9:00 AM Mass on Tuesday for Advent. In addition, we will go to the 9:00 AM Mass on Thursday for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a Holy Day of Obligation. St. Ignatius Parish will also have Mass at 7:00 PM on Wednesday for the vigil and at 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM on Thursday.
Report cards will be issued on Friday; please sign and return the envelope (you may keep the printed report card).
Friday is a red and green themed dress down day; any donation that you give for that day will be used to offset the costs of shipping the Boxes of Joy that we assembled as a school (65).
We began scheduling parent/teacher conferences through OptionC on last Thursday; instructions are available here. You are be able to schedule all conferences (for multiple students or teachers) from one screen. I look forward to meeting and discussing the students successes and strategies for improvement in the second trimester. I will also be available before or after school (my class schedule does not allow for meetings during the day) if we are not able to arrange a meeting for the designated conference day of Tuesday, December 13th.
For the Christmas Concert next Monday, the 5th graders need to wear dress clothes for their song "Soon and Very Soon." They need to wear their outfit to school on Monday for the dress rehearsal at 1:00 PM as well as to the evening performance. The evening show will begin at 7:15 PM this year; the students need to be dropped off in the church by 7:00 PM. DVDs of the concert can be ordered here.
For the month of December, we will be collecting breakfast items to assemble breakfast bags for Aid for Friends as a service project. Aid for Friends (AFF) provides meals to home-bound seniors in our area, and both St. Ignatius and St. John the Evangelist Parishes have a long tradition of providing meals for AFF. You can send in any of the items listed below over the next few weeks. On the morning of December 21st, we are going to assemble the bags along with cards that the students will make to place with the bags. Here is a description from AFF of items that we can put in the bag:
"miniature boxes of cereal, orange juice cartons, packets of oatmeal, tea bags, instant coffee, pudding, fruit cups, boxes of raisins, plastic utensils, napkins. 4 or 5 items in each bag is plenty but they must be non-perishable. *Heavily sugared cereals are not good for many of our clients. Please do not put in the bags any of the following: cookies, muffins, fresh fruit or apple sauce cups that come with an aluminum top that can be easily punctured."
Please be sure to visit the 5th Grade page of the school website for copies of the newsletter, photos, forms, homework, and the assessment calendar, and have a great week!
