Each year, the third grade students at Saint Ignatius Catholic School are involved in a class service project. These projects are designed to help various groups of people around the world.
In previous years, the annual class service project included:
- Collecting items and raising money for Native American children in the Southwest
- Making and sending cards along with items for the U.S. Service Men and Women in Iraq
- Creating a class list of prayer intentions and requests

Third Grade Teacher |
Mrs. Hastings is well-versed in PowerPoint and the Smart Board™; she knows exactly how and when to use these handy tools to her advantage. Third graders are presented with different daily challenges which keep them curious and interested, eager to learn more.
Traditional methods of teaching, coupled with interactive instruction and technological aids comprise the orderly third grade class. As multiplication is the year's shining star, Mrs. Hastings enjoys using songs and bingo for practice and memorization.
A comprehensive academic curriculum ensures students walk away with a well-rounded education. Included in the regular weekly schedule are practice sessions that stress reading, writing, vocabulary, and mathematics. In addition, students are introduced to new and exciting activities to broaden their skills and keep classroom events fresh.
Special activities and projects include:
- Writing and poetry contests
- Monthly book reports
- Mobiles
- Dioramas

A Catholic school graduate herself, Mrs. Hastings brings her personal attendance and teaching experience to the classroom. Students learn the benefit of using graphic organizers and working in a neat classroom - "Things are just easier to find!"
Additional computer lab days are given to the third graders to strengthen their skills.
Numerous field trips are scheduled throughout the year to foster educational and social development. As religion is an important aspect of Saint Ignatius of Antioch Catholic School, Mrs. Hastings is the perfect educator when it comes to spiritual learning. Kindness to others is the underlying motto and class service projects are an annual event intended to help those in need. A decade of the rosary is often said as a class in addition to the standard religion topics:
- The Trinity
- Sacraments
- Liturgical Year
- Social Justice
- God's Law
- Christian Community
Beyond academics, Mrs. Hastings emphasizes a passion for learning, in addition to a solid foundation of reliable study skills. "Less is more", she notes, while configuring the latest academic software on her laptop computer.
